How to do it, step by step
Open the image in AIM Image
File › Open… and pick the photo. It opens JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, PSD and more.
Remove the background
With the layer selected, go to Properties › Quick Actions › Remove Background. The background is hidden with a layer mask.
Refine the edge
Paint on the mask in white to bring areas back or in black to hide more. The original pixels are still there.
Export
File › Export › Export As… and choose PNG to keep the transparency, or save a PSD to keep editing with layers.

Questions about AIM Image
Which format keeps the transparency?
PNG and WebP keep transparency; PSD also keeps the mask and the layers.
What if the automatic cut-out misses?
Touch up the mask with the brush: white to show, black to hide.
Is there an AI option?
Yes: AIM Genera also removes backgrounds (1 credit per image; you get 10 free when you create your account). In that case the image is sent to the server to be processed.
